Another of my Golden Girls has left us. Rue McClanahan died early this morning after suffering a massive stroke. She was only 76 years old. She is best known for her role as Blanche Devereaux on the Golden Girls (you can still catch reruns on the Hallmark Channel and WE TV). As a child I remember watching her on Maude, co-starring along with Bea Arthur (another Golden Girls alum).
In the most recent past, Rue McClanahan had appeared on Logo's Sordid Lives, the Series. Unfortunately, for us, the show was canceled. It had a lot of potential and I found it to be very well written, well acted and funny as hell.
I read a quote today about Rue McClanahan being asked if she was like her character Blanche. This is how she responded in her book, My First Five Husbands...And The One That Got Away, "People always ask me if I'm like Blanche. And I say, 'Well, Blanche was an oversexed, self-involved, man-crazy, vain Southern Belle from Atlanta -- and I'm not from Atlanta.'"
There couldn't have been any more of an appropriate answer than that. She still made laugh, even in death. RIP.
