Progressives Could Save the GOP's Future

It's no secret that the Republican party is in the midst of an identity crisis. While Rush Limbaugh and Michael Steele struggle to be the voices of the GOP something incredible is happening, a younger generation of Republican is emerging, the Progressive Republican. This new generation within the party tends to be more inclusive and non-judgemental, no longer catering to the right-wing base of the party made up of primarily Southern, evangelical, white men. In the words of Meghan McCain, old school Republicans are scared shitless of a future in which America succeeds, and moves on to the future and not lives in to the past.

Just recently, two unlikely Republicans came out in favor of same-sex marriage, John McCain's former campaign manager, Steve Schmidt and none other than the maverick's daughter herself, Meghan McCain.

Both spoke at a Log Cabin Republican event this weekend. Log Cabin Republicans, are a conservative gay rights group. In his speech, Steve Schmidt said, "It cannot be argued that marriage between people of the same sex is un-American or threatens the rights of others".

Last month, Meghan McCain was interviewed by Larry King where she took the opportunity to voice her support of same-sex marriage and a woman's right to choose. Although she said she was personally pro-life, she also said "...I'm not going to judge someone that's pro-choice. It is not my place to judge other people and what they do with their body."

I actually find myself excited about Meghan McCain. She is someone I can really respect, quite simply, because she is respectful of others. Hopefully, this new generation of Progressive Republicans becomes a movement, and in time not just a couple of "mavericks" passing through town and into oblivion. Check out this short clip from Larry King on CNN, which aired last month.

You're not going to become a Log Cabin Republilcan, are you??? Nothing against them, but they ARE Repbublicans. Speaking of which, I got an alert saying that Specter is switching parties to become a Democrat. How cool is that! I hope he gets re-elected!
