Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all. As I reflect back on this last year, I have much for which to be thankful. I am fortunate enough to be spending this holiday with my partner, Bill, in our Miami home. My mother is flying in today and we'll be spending quality time together. The weather is beautiful in South Florida and the windows are open.

Just off the top of my head, I am happy for these things: No matter how small, I have a loving and accepting family; I am blessed with great friends and have a never-ending support system; my friend Jorge has blessed me with the gift of taking care of his puppito, Chester; Bill and I have homes in two of the best US cities; and as tough as disability is, I can still walk.

I love life and I love my family and friends. I am truly thankful. Happy Thanksgiving!

Facial Hair is In

As seen in the latest edition of People magazine, facial hair is in. Clean shaven Matt Damon was named People's sexiest man alive; however, inside the pages of the periodical is the hot list. The list is made up of 14 men and includes Hollywood heartthrobs, all with some form of facial hair with the exception of one, Ben Affleck.

Each of the thirteen men is sporting everything from a five-o'clock-shadow to a full grown beard. The collage of photos above was compiled directly from People's hot list and includes all of the bristled men.

The complete facial hair list includes Patrick Dempsey, Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, David Beckham, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gerard Butler, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake, Will Smith, and Matthew McConaughey.

Welcome From Sunny Miami

Welcome from sunny Miami, Florida, on a rainy day. Bill and I arrived yesterday on a most spectacular fall afternoon. We escaped New York just in time, before the winter storm was scheduled to blow in. As we were descending into South Florida there was not a cloud in the sky and the local temperature was 76 degrees. Immediately we both felt a sense of relief with the warmth of the sun on our faces.

We will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday together in our Miami home with my mother. Then Bill returns to Gotham City on his own, while I selfishly enjoy the mild Miami winter.

I will be contributing to my blog as usual, however, over the next week I might be publishing less frequently while we spend some quality time with mom.

Political Compatibility Quiz

With which 2008 Presidential candidate are you most compatible? Think you've already made up your mind or do you still need help deciding? Take a quiz and you might just be surprised.

There is a legitimate website designed to match you with the best candidate that most closely represents your political needs and beliefs. By taking a short quiz, covering a wide field of issues and then by answering a few questions regarding where you stand on those issues, you'll be supplied with a ranked list of candidates most similar to your positions.

My results were not surprising to me, but for many they were. The two candidates that I have been considering the most were ranked in positions 5 and 6, respectively; however, the percentage difference of compatibility between my top six candidates was nominal. I am not only basing my choice of candidate on our similar positions but also on their electability. So I may or may not vote for the candidate that ranked highest. I can understand, however, how these top candidates were narrowed down.

There is a scientific methodology and algorithm behind the entire process. So you can be comfortable knowing that your results are accurate based on the answers you provide.

To see which candidates most closely represent you, follow the link and get started:

This was sent to me by my friend, David. It appears at http://www.top10virals.com/. Don't you wish your shampoo could do this to you?

Taser Guns Can Kill

If you think the use of taser guns is a safe method, used by police around the world to subdue someone, then think again. These tools can and do kill people. Tasers are being over-used and abused by authorities everyday. When unarmed people can be calmed down through the use of diplomacy, or simply taken-down by force when needed, they should be; however, in place of these alternative tactics, tasers are being used unnecessarily.

Have you heard about the Polish man tasered to death at the Vancouver International Airport? He couldn't speak English and had no interpreter. He was confused and lost within a secured section of the airport for ten hours. After becoming agitated, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) finally came and while he was relatively calm, they tasered him. Within minutes he was dead.

The following link will take you to CBSNews.com, if you care to witness this horrible tragedy. I must warn you, the video is not only graphic but heartbreaking.

Barry Gibb Music Video (1984 Flashback)

VIDEO: Shine, Shine by Barry Gibb

Now this is funny! Here's a blast from the past that, unless you're a huge and I mean huge fan of Barry Gibb, you probably won't remember. My friend, Linda, found this and forwarded it to me.

I nearly forgot about this music video from the early 1980s. It stars none other than Linda's sister, Barbara, as the bride. And, if my memory serves me correctly, I believe Barbara also did another music video; I'm not quite sure which one that might have been though. I remember, before Barbara became "rich and famous", the three of us made cheesy, homemade music videos of our own in their backyard.

Enjoy!

Careless Behavior Adding to AIDS Epidemic

If any single group in the world knows how to protect itself from contracting HIV and AIDS, it's the gay community. Unless one has been living under a rock for the last 25-30 years, everyone knows the gay community was hit hard by the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and the 1990s; and because of that, the gay community has learned how to protect itself from the virus -- through safer-sex. Yet all too often we hear reports, such as the one today from the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida, that 1 in every 22 gay and bisexual men in the state are HIV positive. The rates are not declining among gay and bisexual men as many had hoped. And a very simple reason can explain this.

The culprit is plain and simple, unsafe sex. There is no other way around it. Unfortunately many have become complacent and no longer practice safer-sex.

According to Florida state officials many subgroups within the state's gay and bisexual community are being hit even harder than the group as a whole; it is reported that 1 in 11 gay white men in Broward County, along with 1 in 13 gay black men in Palm Beach County and 1 in 12 gay Hispanic men in Miami Dade County have the AIDS virus.

Thanks to the onslaught of new medications, people with HIV are not only living longer but are now living much healthier lives. HIV used to be equivalent to a most certain death sentence; now HIV has become a manageable disease for many. This has created an atmosphere that AIDS is no longer a big deal. Keep in mind, however, that as of 2004 15,798 people still died of AIDS in the United States.

Other factors contribute to the lackadaisical attitude among those in the gay and bisexual community. After many years of living in fear and avoiding unprotected sex, there has been a backlash due to the frustration with having to have been so cautious for so many years (known as HIV fatigue). There has also been an increase in the use of party drugs; combine that with a new generation of gay youth, oblivious to the devastation AIDS created many years ago, and you get risky behavior leading to new HIV infections.

It's time to have more respect for ourselves and for those with whom we are sexually involved. Insist on safer-sex, not just some of the time, but every time. Please play safely.

US Sets All-Time Record. . .

for chlamydia cases; but that's not all. Last year not only saw over one million cases of chlamydia but also a significant rise in other sexually transmitted diseases, according to the Centers For Disease Control.

Gonorrhea cases increased 5.5% from the previous year. And, along with the increase came a possible rise in a gonorrhea super-bug strain, resistant to a certain class of antibiotics used to treat it. Now let me temper that fact with better news. 2004 saw the lowest levels of gonorrhea since the US started tracking cases in 1941. So although rates are up, they are up from their lowest levels in 66 years.

Syphilis is rather rare in the United States, but if not treated, it can be deadly. Rates for syphilis rose a whopping 14%. The total number of cases reported, of the most contagious forms of the disease, was 9,800 in 2006. Compared to the total US population of approximately 300 million, that number is relatively minuscule.

Just as a friendly reminder, remember to play safe and see your doctor regularly.

Review of CBS News on Logo

I really hate to say it, but the full-length premier of CBS News on Logo, was plagued with issues last night. The inaugural newscast was slow and boring. News anchor, Jason Bellini, appeared to be in constipated discomfort. And, although the writing was acceptable, it could still have been tweaked for improvement. There was the usual cast of advertising characters, but to maintain ad revenue the network can't afford to put its audience to sleep. My official report-card grade is a: C.

The regular three minute Logo News Breaks seem to hold my interest more than the new thirty minute news program. The pace from story to story was slow and monotonous. And before someone judges me and my attention span, one must first understand that I am a television news junkie. I can't get enough; therefore, it might have more to do with host, Jason Bellini's "deer in headlights" demeanor than my ability to concentrate.

Jason Bellini, formerly of CNN and regular Logo anchor, seemed so uncomfortable he hardly cracked a smile; and, he moved awkwardly between headlines. Maybe Jason was feeling the pressure of hosting Logo's first thirty minute news show or quite possibly he was just worried about making a snafu. Whatever it was, he came across as rigid and uptight.

The news stories could have been more current and less detailed, another factor dragging the score down. With the advent of 24 hour cable news and the Internet, news becomes old after only just a few hours; unfortunately for Logo, their weekly newscasts will be filled with stories that have already run their course because of the nature of its scheduled frequency; original Logo newscasts will be produced only once per week. As important as details are, our society has become a headline news society always looking for the Reader's Digest version, the quick fix. Logo's content is more like a hybrid of The New York Times and CNN. My advice: be more precise and quickly transition to the next story.

There were, of course, a few saving grace moments. Itay Hod reported on Andy Towle, a very popular blogger. Hod's relaxed charismatic personality and good looks are scene stealing. And, then there was the piece on gay-friendly international rugby player Ben Cohen, another fine piece of eye-candy. Overall, the writing and the stories were acceptable.

True success in cable or TV is measured by its ad revenue; and, advertising is completely dependent upon having an audience. The "make it and they will come" strategy is not enough these days. Cable networks must not only pull them [the audience] in but must keep them interested long enough to maintain them. Logo now has the chance to do just that. With only minor revamping the new CBS News on Logo can be another great success story. Tune back in next Monday night at 7:00 PM EST to see if Logo makes a marked improvement.

Not one commercial featured a gay themed ad. Advertisers throughout the broadcast included: Orbitz (travel website), Hydroxycut (weight-loss supplement), Newimage.com (cosmetic surgery company), Virgin Mobile (cell phone provider), Saturn (automobile company), Ameriprise Financial (financial advisers), Stolichnaya (vodka), K-Y Intrigue (personal lubricant), Garnier Fructis (hair conditioner), new Jennifer Lopez album via Rhapsody.com (music website) and Orange Glo (hardwood floor cleaner). Local sponsors in the New York market included: Mercedes-Benz Manhattan (local NY dealer), and Time Warner Cable (cable company).

Closeted Gay Lawmakers Busted For Hypocrisy

What is going on? Lately we are hearing more and more about anti-gay legislators getting busted for soliciting gay sex in public places. Are these public activities increasing, or are homophobic closet-cases getting busted more often, or are they just being reported more often? I don't know the answer to these questions, but the hypocrisy is driving me insane.

Some of our local, state and federal officials speak out so adamantly against gay rights, and yet all too often these are the men being arrested for soliciting gay sex in our parks and public restrooms. Whether one believes it is morally right or wrong, for men to cruise each other in public places, is becoming a secondary concern. The real issue here is why do these lawmakers vote against legal rights for those living open and honest lives, in committed same-sex relationships? It is outrageously hypocritical when they, themselves, are living double-lives and are often two-timing on their wives.

Lately we've heard about the sexual tribulations of, conservative Republicans, Senator Larry Craig and Representative Richard Curtis. The latest hypocrite is Bob Allen, another Republican, this time from Tampa. He was convicted of soliciting sex from an undercover cop in a park bathroom. I won't even get into the sexual details; it's the same old story.

What I will point out, however, is Allen's anti-gay rights voting record. According to 365gay.com, Logo's on-line news source, State Representative Allen supports efforts to amend Florida's State Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. He also opposed legislation to protect gay students from being bullied. But the real hypocritical violation is that, during Florida's last legislative session, Allen voted for a failed bill to toughen public sex laws. That couldn't be more ironic.

The official website for the Florida House of Representatives states that Allen is not only married, but has a child. His only recreational interest listed is water sports; I have to say reading that, was a laugh-out-loud moment. For those not up on sexual lingo, water sports is code for urine play. I'll leave it at that.

As long as our society continues to struggle with demonizing homosexuality, men will continue to live in shame and lead double-lives. But I ask, who are the real victims here? To me it couldn't be clearer. Beyond the obvious, the wives, it's the out gay community that suffers from this hypocrisy. Closeted gay men are literally the gate-keepers of our legal protection and they are voting against us. If they don't want to come out, that's their business, but don't deny us what we rightfully deserve in the meantime.

Tales of the City Musical

VIDEO: I Don't Feel Like Dancing by Scissor Sisters

Jake Shears, front man for the pop-group Scissor Sisters, is writing a musical based on Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series. Combining my all time favorite fictional series with one of my favorite pop gurus could be genius or could be horribly tragic. My money is on genius.

One's first exposure to the catchy pop sound of Scissor Sisters might hearken one back to the disco era of the 1970s; that's how good they are. Their hit tune Take Your Mama Out is just as decadent, however, it's more reminiscent of the funky rock sound of classic Elton John, before his music went pop in the 1980s.

Jake Shears' flamboyant style and his rich lyrics are a magical blend of qualities that could just pull off the translation, taking Tales of the City from the page to the live theater. Too bad he won't be performing in the stage version; his falsetto could lend to the interesting interpretation of Armistead Maupin's colorful characters.

Although most of the songs have already been written, the budding musical is still in its infancy. Shears has been working on the production for just about one year now and rumor has it he is aiming for London's West End for its premier. If all goes well, perhaps New York's Broadway could be next. But I don't want to get ahead of myself.

In the meantime, the band is working on its third album and it is due out some time in early 2009.

Another ENDA Update

If you have been following my blog for some time, you most probably have noticed my articles on ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (please see my previous postings beginning in September). This bill was introduced to Congress, in an effort, to end workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and sexual identity. Unfortunately, it was rewritten and "watered down" to exclude gender identity; however, there is some good news.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed ENDA. Even without the inclusion of gender identity, it is a step in the right direction. For more than 30 years, grassroots organizations have been lobbying Congress to pass laws to protect our community. With the help of HRC, Human Rights Campaign, a bill was finally passed.

Now back to the bad news. According to Concerned Women For America (a conservative and religious coalition), President Bush has promised to veto the legislation. Why, some might ask? Because supposedly, it violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Basically, it's just BS.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act prohibits the Federal Government from substantially burdening the free exercise of religion except for compelling reasons. What? Yes, President Bush feels that ENDA would violate the religious freedom of those firms that want to fire their gay employees, but would be prohibited from doing so under this legislation; although, religious organizations would be exempt from ENDA. Like I said before, it's just BS. President Bush is protecting his base, the religious-right.

This is why it is important for the gay community, and its supporters, to vote in the next Presidential election. We need someone who will protect us. The next time protective legislation, for the gay community, is passed in Congress we need a President who will sign the bill into law. Any of the Democratic Presidential candidates, running for the 2008 nomination, support this and many other protections. On the Republican side, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain support limited protection. Please do your homework and vote in the Primary and General Presidential Elections.

Happenings in the Gay Media

EXPANDING LOGO: Logo is one of my favorite cable networks; it's owned by MTV and was created for the gay, lesbian and transgender community. Logo offers a wide variety of programming, from original series and movies to documentaries and serious news. While channel surfing, I often find myself landing on Logo and have difficulty turning away -- except when they play their Bad Girls marathons (sorry but lesbian prisoners aren't my thing); although, I was fascinated by the original Prisoner Cell Block H in the 1970s, but I digress.

Through Logo's two year partnership with CBS news, the two have been producing short three-minute news breaks for the network. The news break episodes focus on hard-hitting, relevant topics of interest to the gay, lesbian and transgender community. Now Logo is expanding its news division and will produce a regular half hour weekly newscast beginning on Monday November 12th at 7:00 PM EST. The newscast will also be available at http://www.365gay.com/.

The new show will be anchored by Logo's Jason Bellini, formerly of CNN and will include reports from Itay Hod, previously from NY1. As a side note, Itay Hod offers credible reporting and delicious eye-candy. He makes you just want to hug him. Well, maybe not just hug him.

I plan to watch as often as possible. If you are interested, check your local listings or with your cable/satellite provider for channel information in your area.

CLEANING-UP THE ADVOCATE: By now this is old news, but thought I'd mention it anyway. PlanetOut Inc. will be selling off its adult publication business (gay porn), to please its new investors. PlanetOut Inc. is the parent company of The Advocate, Out and RSVP Vacations. PlanetOut Inc. acquired The Advocate and its adult publications from LPI Media in 2005. The Advocate has been around for more than 40 years and is published bi-weekly, providing stories on serious news and entertainment to the gay, lesbian and transgender community.

It's no secret that PlanetOut Inc. has had some financial trouble due to poor business decisions, mismanagement and some bad luck. Now in an effort to restructure and get back on track, PlanetOut Inc. is selling off some of its businesses including the adult publications' division and its cruise ship business.

A good friend of mine was one of the original founders of The Advocate and some of its adult magazines. He continues to work for the company now, under PlanetOut Inc.'s ownership. In a private conversation I had with him, he said how saddened he was that Men magazine, formerly Advocate Men, was being sold off. He started Men many years ago and said it was his baby. This restructuring should have no impact on his employment, but there goes my free supply of gay porn.

I hope that you will support PlanetOut Inc. by subscribing to The Advocate and/or Out magazine. Links to their websites are below:

Marc Jacobs Discusses Murakami Collaboration

VIDEO: Marc Jacobs, designer for Louis Vuitton, discussed his long-standing collaboration with Japanese pop-artist, Takashi Murakami prior to a star-studded gala commencing the artist's contemporary art retrospective.

October marked the opening of Copyright Murakami at the MOCA, in downtown Los Angeles. Murakami created a cultural exhibit of his bold and colorful artwork including his design-work with luxury retailer, Louis Vuitton; nearly 100 pieces of Murakami's paintings and sculptures are on display along with hundreds more of his consumer products.

Many celebrities were on-hand at the opening party for the up-scale event. Some famous faces included Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Rachel Griffiths, K.D. Lang, and Christina Ricci, just to name a few. Hip-hop artist, Kanye West preformed.

Often compared to and inspired by the late pop-artist Andy Warhol, Murakami embraces the culture of commerce and the market place. A multi-million-dollar Louis Vuitton boutique is central to Murakami's MOCA exhibit. Fully staffed, the boutique offers merchandise for sale, including a handbag exclusive to the Murakami show. My life partner, Bill, Director of Visual Merchandising for Louis Vuitton North America, was part of the team to set up the temporary luxury retail space at MOCA.

The retrospective is on display through February 11th, 2008. If you are in Los Angeles between now and then check out the show. Bill said the exhibit is fabulous.

Married Republican State Rep. Hired Gay Prostitute

Picture this: A cross-dressing, gay, married man and father, being extorted by a male prostitute after a bizarre late-night tryst beginning at an erotic video store and ending in an up-scale hotel room. Whatever image you might have in mind, you've now pictured the new Republican sex-scandal. You just can't make this stuff up. No one would believe it. But, it is true.

The Republican Party, the political party of family values, is starting to have some credibility issues. It began with Mark Foley, and then David Vitter, it went on with Larry Craig and now it's Rep. Richard Curtis (from the state of Washington).

This story is newsworthy for several reasons. First, the representative broke the law by hiring a prostitute, secondly and most importantly Rep. Curtis has an anti-gay-rights voting record in his home state, and lastly he represents the self-touted party of family values while living a double-life. Another fine hypocrite!

According to The Seattle Times, Curtis told the police an extremely detailed account of the incident. He told them where the two had met, what and where they did it and pointed out where in the hotel room police could find DNA evidence of the sexual encounter. When police questioned Curtis about a bag containing nylon rope and a toy stethoscope, Curtis said it had nothing to do with the matter.

Try to follow this convoluted summary of events (from the police report and eyewitness accounts) that took place in the wee morning hours of October 26th, 2007. Rep. Curtis went to the Hollywood Erotic Boutique at approximately 12:45 AM; he had a conversation with the store clerk admitting he was gay but also married with children. He was then later seen wearing women's lingerie while receiving oral sex in one of the video booths. He later met Cody Castagna, the male prostitute also known as "Stallion".

Rep. Curtis and Stallion later met at Curtis' hotel room at approximately 3:34 AM. After having unprotected anal sex, Curtis fell asleep. Stallion then took Curtis' wallet and left the room. Stallion later called Curtis, at 7:00 AM, and told him he knew he was a married, state representative and that he had taken explicit pictures of him with his cell-phone camera. Stallion offered to return Curtis' wallet in exchange for his silence and $1,000. The police report contradicts this account with details that Curtis had agreed to pay Stallion $1,000 for unprotected anal sex.

During an interview with a Spokane police detective, Curtis claimed that he had given Stallion $100 for "gas money" and not for sex. He also claimed to have left $200 for Stallion, in an envelope, at the hotel front desk in exchange for his wallet; however, Stallion later called Curtis back and demanded the remaining $800. At this point Curtis had already called the police, and Stallion's planned extortion had then been foiled.

All along, Curtis had asked the police to keep the entire incident quiet and said he didn't want to press charges against Stallion, but instead only wanted his wallet returned.

Stallion's version of the tryst was slightly different in that, Curtis had given his wallet to him as collateral until Curtis could pay the remainder of the $1,000. Stallion also admitted that he threatened to tell Curtis' wife and publicly expose his double-life.

Curtis was later interviewed by The Columbian newspaper in which he said he did not solicit sex, he is not gay, and that he got into this mess by trying to help someone out. Yah, right!

Representative Curtis later resigned. What more can I say?

Poll Results

Thanks to the eleven people who participated in my October poll. Unfortunately, the low number of respondents doesn't statistically tell us too much about the subject. The question and results for October were:

Do you favor gay marriage?

Yes - 90%
No - 0%
Undecided - 10%

What the numbers do tell me is that my blog readers are of mostly one camp, the liberal camp. It was fun for me anyway. I hope you'll participate again in the next poll. It's about the 2008 Presidential General Election (you will find it at the top right-hand side of my blog). Maybe I'll have a better response rate next time. Thanks and enjoy.
